Piero della Francesca. The exhibition entitled Piero della Francesca. A survey on a myth is one of the most longed-for exhibitions in 2016, as I said in advance it would be the great event taking place in the Musei di San Domenico in Forlì.
As always, the title of the exhibition arranged by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Forlì, in collaboration with the Municipality of Forlì, reveals the exhibition programme. The same thing happened last year when a spectacular exhibition dedicated to Boldini was organized.
This exhibition doesn’t display all the works or a part of the works by Piero della Francesca.
But you won’t be disappointed! On the contrary, it will be a discovery!
As the title suggests, the exhibition consists of a research and an analysis of Piero della Francesca as a source of fascination to various artist from various ages, apparently different from the artists of his time and from Piero himself.

An exhibition like this has never been organized, because it’s very complicated to gather Piero della Francesca’s works: there are a lot of pieces of art and most of them can’t be carried. A comparison with the most important Renaissance masters and contemporary age masters is even more complicated.
Four paintings by Piero della Francesca are on display.
These paintings played a key role in the history of art, because they influenced even 20th-century artists. A whole generation of painters, including De Chirico, Carrà, and the American painter Edward Hopper, considered Piero della Francesca their model and their point of reference.
About 250 pieces of art are on display and they all compare with Piero’s precision, his geometrical perfection, his painting fixed in a timeless space and crowded with symbols and mysteries yet to be solved.
If you visit the exhibition, you’ll discover a red thread which connects Piero della Francesca with several artists, who found in the unperturbed gazes of his characters and in his almost empty landscapes, a way to organize the world, and to describe its beauty.
You can enjoy works by Luca Signorelli, Beato Angelico, Perugino, paintings by the Macchiaioli, including works by Signori and Silvestro Lega, paintings by Felice Casorati, Carrà, Hopper, and Balthus. Through the perfect, eternal and timeless atmosphere created by Piero della Francesca, many generations of artists, especially the 20th-century artists, give voice to human fears and represent the sacredness hidden in everyday life.

grazie mille! sicuramente una mostra da vedere!
La mostra è quella che non ci si aspetta, ma è una vera indagine su Piero della Francesca e sul suo mito nel corso dei secoli.
Impegnativa, ma che ti lascerà tanti spunti.
sono molto interessata al parallelismo fra Piero e Hopper, artista che sto scoprendo ora (so che a breve dovrebbe esserci una mostra a palazzo Fava a Bologna).
Ho sempre considerato le opere di piero “senza tempo”, come se non ci fosse polvere nei suoi spazi. la luce senza dubbio mi sembra l’aspetto maggiormente intrigante del suo lavoro… come se fosse ultraterrenea piuttosto che realistica e questo mi attrae e al tempo stesso mi inquieta, come in Hopper. Cosa ne pensi?
In realtà la mostra vuole dimostrare che nel corso della storia dell’arte c’è una corrente stilistica e di pensiero che parte da Piero della Francesca e arriva al Novecento di Hopper e Balthus.
Sinceramente questa lettura mi ha un po’ spiazzata all’inizio, ma arrivata alla fine del percorso, davanti all’opera di Hopper ho capito dove volevano arrivare i curatori.
E’ stata una scoperta per me trovare un comune sentire in tanti artisti, che sono partiti da Piero della Francesca per rappresentare il mondo.
Gli edifici, le vedute urbane, l’atmosfera sospesa di Hopper è affine allo stile di Piero della Francesca.
In entrambi io ci trovo il silenzio e la contemplazione del mondo.
La mostra di Hopper a Bologna (Palazzo Fava) apre al pubblico a metà marzo 2016. Da vedere ! 😉
