CULTURE CHANEL. The woman who reads. The exhibition which at the end of summer will take place in Venice is dedicated to Coco Chanel, to her story and her relationship with books and reading.
From Greek authors to modern poets, Gabrielle Chanel’s library will reveals works that influenced her life and shaped the personality of the woman who was not only a great fashion designer, but a great reader, as well.
Venice was one of the places from which Coco drew her inspiration, and here for the first time her library will be displayed.
The exhibition CULTURE CHANEL. The woman who reads will run from September 17th 2016 to January 8th 2017 at the Ca’ Pesaro Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna di Venezia (International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice).
An exhibition which will illustrate a less known aspect of the life of the woman who wrote the history of fashion.
The exhibition will explore Gabrielle Chanel’s life, from the solitude of her childhood spent in an orphanage in Aubazine, to the end of her life, the writers and the books that guided her journey, enriching her imagery.
The exhibition will highlight Chanel’s relationships with books, writing and her creations.
A dialogue which goes through ages, from ancient times to her contemporaries. Coco’s library contains works by Homer, Plato, Virgil, Sophocles, Lucretius, Dante, Montaigne, Cervantes, Madame de Sévigne, Stéphane Mallarmé, and works by authors who were part of her life and her friends, such as Pierre Reverdy, Max Jacob and Jean Cocteau.
Art objects coming from Coco’s Paris apartment will be exhibited for the first time, along with jewellery and perfumes, which will outline the intimate portrait of a woman whose life and creativity became a legend.
The exhibition is curated by Jean-Louis Froment in collaboration with Gabriella Belli, with the support of CHANEL.
