CHRISTMAS TIME 2016 IN MILAN

In December Christmas will turn Milan on.
This post is dedicated to those who want to spend their Christmas holiday in Milan. Among art exhibitions, museums and evens you will be spoilt for choice.

Christmas celebrations will start on December 7th 2016 on the occasion of the feast of Sant’Ambrogio (Saint Ambrose) when the traditional Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo (Duomo Square) will be turned on.
Then, there will be the Christmas markets which from December 9th 2016 to January 6th 2017 will enliven the area near the Duomo.
This year the proceeds of the shopping will contribute to the restoration of the spires of the Duomo. During Christmas time in Milan you can visit several interesting art exhibitions.

Here are the exhibitions you can’t miss.

Christmas 2016: the exhibitions to see in Milan

“La Madonna della Misericordia” (“The Virgin of Mercy”) by Piero della Francesca- even this year the Municipality of Milan will give an exhibition consisting of only one masterpiece as a gift to everybody. From December 6th 2016 to January 8th 2017 at Palazzo Marino, seat of the Municipality of Milan, “La Madonna della Misericordia” (“The Virgin of Mercy”) by Piero della Francesca will be on display.
You should visit it because: it’s a masterpiece which is hardly on loan; it’s has been recently restored and has regained its original splendour; and it’s a real gift because you can admire this panel for free.

“Bellotto and Canaletto. Lo stupore della luce” (“Bellotto and Canaletto. Astonishment and Light”) – an exhibition dedicated to two great Venetian painters: Canaletto and Bellotto. Around 100 works among paintings and engravings, in order to illustrate the history of the artistic movement of the Vedutismo (landscape painting).
You should visit it because: one-third of the works on show have never been displayed in Italy before.

“Pietro Paolo Rubens e la nascita del Barocco” (“Peter Paul Rubens and the Birth of Baroque”) – a great exhibition devoted to Peter Paul Rubens, one of the greatest artists of European art history, but often considered to be simply a Flemish painter.
You should visit it because: Rubens is considered to be the first among the Baroque painters who developed a personal artistic style after his journey to Italy.

“Hokusai Hiroshige Utamaro” (“Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro. Settings and faces of Japan that seduced the West”)- over 200 xylographies and illustrated books for a journey into the world of Japanese culture through works loaned from the prestigious collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art.
You should visit it because: it’s a journey into the artistic and personal world of the three masters who have influenced generations of artists all over the world.

“Boom 60! Era arte moderna” (“Boom 60! Modern Art Era”)- the Museo del Novecento (The Museum of the 20th century) hosts the most original exhibition in Milan, a tale in pictures about how Italian art was between the 1950s and the 1960s through 140 works including paintings, sculptures and graphic artworks portraying artists, scandals and gossip of an effervescent season.
From October 18th 2016 to March 12th 2017- Museo del Novecento (Museum of the 20th century).
You should visit it because: art is not only technique, but it is also smart set, and on exhibition you’ll find “illustrated news” magazines such as “Epoca”, “L’Europeo” and “La Domenica Illustrata” which witnessed great success and several arguments at that time.
