WINCKELMANN and the “Unpublished monuments of antiquity”
Johann Joachim Winckelmann was a refined and innovative scholar.
He was one of the greatest classical scholar, theoretician and father of history of art, and this year we’ll celebrate the 300th anniversary of his birth.
In Switzerland (which in 2016 he had celebrated the birth of Dada) will celebrate Winckelmann with an exhibition running from February 5th to May 7th 2017.
Johann Joachim Winckelmann, born on December 9th 1717 in Stendal in the Altmark, son of a cobbler, is known mainly for his work “History of Art in Antiquity” published in 1764 with the original title “Geschichte der Kunst des Alterhums”.
The exhibition tour revolves around an important work, but little known, by Winckelmann, “Monumenti antichi inediti” (“Unpublished monuments of antiquity”) (1767), last work by the German scholar in which he combines the descriptions of the Monuments with images.
The essay consists of plates, all signed, and painted by artists chosen and paid by Winckelmann himself.
