HELSINKI WHAT TO SEE: WHERE TO GO AND WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T MISS

Helsinki what to see and where to go if you’re an art lover and especially if you want to discover the capital city of Finland?
If you’ve decided to visit Helsinki this is the right post for you to find inspiration and plan a trip to discover the largest city of Scandinavia, an amazing destination to visit in winter, but pleasant also during the hottest months of the year.

Helsinki what to see

Suomenlinna Fortress | Helsinki

Suomenlinna Fortress

SUOMENLINNA FORTRESS

One of the unmissable places in Helsinki is Suomenlinna Fortress, which stands on an island and is an ancient naval base (one of the largest in the world) which today is a residential island and home to some museums.
This island has been fundamental for the development of the city since the 18th century, and for this reason it’s important to visit it, and you’d better being accompanied by a local guide who can tell you anecdotes and curios facts about a place which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To visit Suomenlinna Fortress you’d better book a complete tour including ferry ticket, guided tour and a food tasting tour among the restaurants on the island where you can try local dishes.

HELSINKI WHAT TO SEE IF YOU HAVE LITTLE TIME AT YOUR DISPOSAL

If you don’t have many days to spend in Helsinki and you don’t want to miss the most important places of the city, I recommend the tour Hop-On Hop-Off.
It’s the easiest way to visit the city, by getting on a double-decker bus and with a ticket valid for 24 or 48 hours (you can choose the duration!).
The peculiarity of the tour is that you can hop on and off as much as you please, and you can board the bus from any of the different stops around the city.
This way you can admire the main attractions in Helsinki such as Helsinki Olympic stadium, Senate Square, Temppeliaukio church, Stockmann Department Store and many other culturally significant places.

For example, do you know that Helsinki is the capital of photography?
If you get off the bus near the Finnish Museum of Photography you can admire photos by artists such as Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman.

HELSINKI WHAT TO SEE CHURCHES: CHAPEL OF SILENCE, HELSINKI CATHEDRAL AND TEMPPELIAUKIO CHURCH

The Chapel of Silence is not important from an artistic point of view, but from a symbolic point of view. In fact, in this place can pray everyone, not matter what your religion is.
Then, don’t miss the Helsinki Lutheran Cathedral, which will leave you speechless, and inside it you can admire its gold decorations in sharp contrast with its snow-white walls.
And you must visit one of the city’s most fascinating churches, the majestic Temppeliaukio Church, fully excavated and built out of rock.
And if you’re lucky you can listen to the church choir and verify the perfect acoustics of this amazing place.
