FLEMISH MASTERPIECES IN VENICE: THE EXHIBITION FROM TITIAN TO RUBENS
Flemish masterpieces are in Venice for an exhibition curated by the director of Rubenshuis in Antwerp, with the scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
A unique exhibition, housed in the Doge’s apartments at the Doge’s Palace in Venice, which will examine the cultural ferment which swept across Europe between the 16th and the 17th centuries, bringing also some works which are rarely on loan back to Venice.
The Flemish masterpieces on exhibition in Venice
The exhibition taking place in Venice is a journey into Flemish art, arranged by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia in collaboration with the city of Antwerp, VisitFlanders and the Flemish Community.
I attended the official inauguration, and on that occasion I decided to make a special video, which sums up my visit and gives also fast information about the exhibition thanks to some tools provided by the platform Movavi Video Editor.
FLEMISH MASTERPIECES AND THREE ICONS OF VENETIAN PAINTINGS
After a long time, three works which are rarely on loan return to Venice, but this is a special occasion and an exception has been made.
These are three amazing works: the altarpiece “Angel foretelling the Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria” by Tintoretto, coming from the former San Geminiano Church, known as “David Bowie’s Tintoretto”, because it was bought by the rock star in the 1980s; the “Portrait of a Lady and her Daughter” by Titian, thought to be the depiction of Titian’s mistress and their daughter Emilia; and the painting “Jacopo Pesaro, Bishop of Paphos, being presented by Pope Alexander VI to Saint Peter” by Titian, too.
ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI OF FLANDERS
The exhibition “From Titian to Rubens” amazes in each room and displays also a painting by Michaelina Wautier, a Belgian painter defined “Artemisia Gentileschi of Flanders”, an extraordinarily talented artist, but little is known about her.
This woman devoted herself to mythological subjects as well as portraits, landscapes and still lifes, children’s heads and scenes from ordinary life, and the exhibition will make you discover this exceptional talent.

FLEMISH MASTERPIECES AND MUSIC
A special section of the exhibition is dedicated to Flemish composer Adriaan Willaert, who from the Flanders arrived in Venice to become Maestro di Cappella of the Basilica of Saint Mark in 1527. It was Willaert who founded the Venetian School of music, attended, among others, by Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi.
The room devoted to this artistic link between Venice and Flanders proposes the music of that amazing historical period again and the display of some musical instruments from the 16th century.

The visit is included in Doge’s Palace’s admission ticket, so all you have to do is buy the admission ticket to the museum, and you can enter the rooms dedicated to the exhibition.
