Belvedere Vienna works
The Belvedere in Vienna is also world famous under the name Osterreichische Galerie Belvedere.
It is one of the most beautiful buildings of Austrian Baroque art and was built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy.
Before you immerse yourself in the fabulous works that this museum holds, I recommend that if you want to visit it, you reserve your entrance ticket. In fact, this is one of the most famous museums in Vienna and the lines at the entrance can be really long at certain times of the year.
Here are which works to admire inside Vienna’s Belvedere.
THE KISS BY KLIMT
Gustav Klimt’s Kiss is the symbol of the Belvedere in Vienna and is a work you shouldn’t miss before exiting this place full of masterpieces.
The painting belongs to Klimt’s “Golden Period” that is that phase of his artistic activity in which gold prevails in his paintings. The artist was fascinated by the brightness and beauty of mosaics of The Basilica of Saint Mark in Venice and Byzantine churches in Ravenna.
Klimt depicts two lovers in a tight embrace who appear suspended in an abstract place, as if their love makes the world, anguishes and worries disappear.

NAPOLEON CROSSING THE ALPS
This is a painting which can’t pass unnoticed!
The huge painting portrays Napoleon, proud and beautiful, while crossing the Alps, victorious.
The painting was commissioned by Napoleon himself to Jacques-Louis David and is also known as “Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass”. There are five versions of this painting housed in five different museums: in the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin, in the Musée National du Cháteau de Malmaiso and two versions hang in the Palace of Versailles in Paris.
JUDITH AND THE HEAD OF HOLOFERNES (ALSO KNOWN AS JUDITH I)
Many of Gustav Klimt’s paintings are housed in the Belvedere in Vienna and “Judith I” is one of his most representative paintings.
It’s one of the first paintings in which gold is used to fill almost the entire surface.
The subject portrayed is the Biblical heroine Judith who beheaded the enemy Holofernes, enabling her people to free from foreign domination.
Klimt doesn’t focus on the gesture of the woman beheading the enemy, but on her gaze and proud bearing, portraying a self-confident woman.
ROCKY LANDSCAPE BY FRIEDERICH
Caspar David Friedrich is the leading painter of German Romanticism and is famous for his landscapes depicting scenes with ruins surrounded by a mysterious atmosphere.
The complete title of the painting is “Rocky Landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains” and was painted in 1882 using a range of dark colours able to evoke melancholic atmospheres.
For Friedrich art had to portray artist’s inner feelings and not to represent a real landscape.
