THE IMPRESSIONISTS BETWEEN DREAM AND COLOUR IN TURIN

In Turin, at the National Artillery Museum Mastio della Cittadella, from 11 March to 4 June 2023, there is the exhibition Impressionists between dream and colour, the event that tells the story of the great masters of Impressionism.

With about 300 works by more than 100 artists, the exhibition tells the origins and history of the revolutionary artistic movement born in France in the mid 19th century.

For the first time in Italy, an exhibition brings together representative works by all Impressionist painters participating in the 8 Impressionist exhibitions held between 1874 and 1886, with 45 oil paintings, 23 mixed media works, graphic works, preparatory studies, ceramics and sculptures.

The Impressionists between dream and colour exhibition in Turin describes the wealth of artists who, starting from the classicism of Ingres and passing through the realism of Courbet and the lesson of the Barbizon School, led to the birth of Impressionism and its legacy.

THE THREE SECTIONS OF THE EXHIBITION

PRE-IMPRESSIONISM
From David to L’École de Barbizon, the ferments of Impressionism

The opening section of the exhibition traces, starting with David, the ferment that ran through the Parisian art world at the end of the 19th century, imprisoned in an academic vision and rigidly controlled by the mechanism of the Salons.
Aulic painting and classical themes ruled, artists were imprisoned in a rigid world that did not accept novelty and experimentation.

The ferment that led to a revolt against the prevailing academicism and that resulted in the choice of themes addressed to the peasant and working-class world, arose thanks to artists such as Delacroix, Courbet, Millet, Corot and others who, leaving their studios and ateliers, entered the streets, the fields, the real world, to recount the transformations taking place in a society that was moving towards the dawn of a new century, full of discoveries and transformations, both social and technological.

THE PERIOD
Impressionism

The second section is devoted to the Impressionist revolution and its way of depicting everyday life, exalting the reality of a world that was inexorably changing.
The advent of photography, cinema and the great social and technological transformations of a century that was dawning would also transform the world of art.

Through the works of some of the great protagonists and their co-protagonists, the exhibition recounts the adventure of Impressionism, which touched on the themes, experiments and discoveries of a group of artists who, although very different from each other, in terms of styles and themes, contributed with their courage to radically changing the world of art, giving birth to modern art.

POST-IMPRESSIONISM
The legacy of Impressionism

After the Impressionist storm, art would never be the same again and new artists would come forward making the Impressionists’ rapid and essential way of painting their own.
This ferment is addressed in the third section of the exhibition, featuring artists who helped reinforce the revolutionary message of Impressionism.

Painting en plein air became, in fact, an indispensable way of painting, as did the use and research of unusual themes. The message launched by the Impressionists spread to every latitude, the followers of the new movement gave rise to experimentation, provocation and research, previously unimaginable.
This wind of novelty liberated the art world, spreading that vision of freedom and provocation from which art, as we see it today, emerged.
