THE SCRIBE OG THE GODS
This exceptional sculpture shows a howler monkey-man richly attired with an elaborate water lily headdress and a serpent on his forearm.
In his hands he holds a brush and an ink pot.
For the Mayas the monkey was the patron of the arts and responsible for communicating the intentions of the gods to the people by means of writing.
He was therefore the guardian of knowledge.
