PITTI PALACE FLORENCE: A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PALACE
Pitti Palace was designed, probably, by Brunelleschi in 1445.
After Luca Pitti’s death and the economic collapse of his family, the building was bought by Cosimo I Medici for his wife Eleanor of Toledo, who transformed it into her court.
Pitti Palace was enlarged and underwent many changes throughout its history, making it the most splendid place in Florence.
WORKS TO SEE AT PITTI PALACE
Today Pitti Palace is home to important museums which boast art collections built up by those who chose the palace as their residence.
Among the works you must see there are paintings of 2 artists:
- in the Palatine Gallery you can’t miss paintings by Raphael such as the “Portrait of Agnolo Doni” (1505) and the portrait of a woman known as “La Velata” (“The woman with the veil”) (1515).
- in the Gallery of Modern Art you must admire “The two Foscari” by Francesco Hayez.
These are only two of the great artists whose works are housed at the Pitti Palace, so you’d better visit without hurrying all museums as well as the famous Boboli Gardens which can be considered an open-air museum.

The first Sunday of each month, the museum opens with normal opening hours and the entrance is free for everyone, but it is advisable to book in advance.
