VAN EYCK. AN OPTICAL REVOLUTION: THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF 2020
In 2020 the Museum of Fine Arts Gent (MSK) will host the exhibition Van Eyck. An optical revolution from February 1st to April 30th 2020. A great event which celebrates the original splendour of the panels of the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”, after a long restoration.
Van Eyck. An Optical Revolution
When I visited Flanders in 2019, I announced on my social channels that 2020 would be an important year for Van Eyck and the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. On that occasion I had the opportunity to admire the panels of van Eyck’s masterpiece in the laboratory where the panels underwent a restoration and I got some details about the largest exhibition on the Flemish master ever.
Now it’s time to tell you everything and explain why this is the unmissable event of 2020!
WHY VAN EYCK. AN OPTICAL REVOLUTION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITION OF 2020 IN EUROPE
Van Eyck. An optical revolution is the most important exhibition of 2020 because it illustrates the life and works of the Flemish master, by casting new light on his refined painting and his influence on contemporary artists and artists of the following ages.
The exhibition will display for the first time about twenty works of the artist, that is to say half of his production we know today, putting in the centre of the tour the restored panels of the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” which is considered his masterpiece.
Thanks to the restoration of the panels of the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”, begun in 2012, original colours have come to light and we can understand how innovative was van Eyck’s knowledge of optics and colour application, which allowed him to create depth effects, and attention to details that still today leave us astonished. Van Eyck was the artist who perfected oil painting technique and the exhibition in Ghent will make us observe at a short distance the panels of the polyptych, allowing us to make a comparison with other paintings of the artist himself and works of contemporary artists all over Europe.
Van Eyck. An optical revolution will celebrate van Eyck’s work and the return home of the restored panels of the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”, which in October 2020 will be gathered again and definitively in the Polyptych placed in the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, few steps from the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) hosting the exhibition.
So, the exhibition is an once-in-a-lifetime chance to look at a short distance the restored panels, many paintings of the Flemish painter gathered together for the first time, and offers also the opportunity to understand how the painting technique of this artist changed the Western painting and why it was so revolutionary.
